Modern Wine Cellar Design for a Small Space Under the Stairs
Nowadays, you don’t need a large room to build your own wine cellar at home. If you have a small number of bottles in your collection and want to invest in a refrigerated wine room, you can utilize a walk-in closet, a garage, or the space under your stairs.
Hiring a master builder can help complete the installation of your dream wine cellar according to your available space and budget. With the creativity and extensive experience of Wine Cellar Specialists in wine room construction, you can display your collection attractively, regardless of the size of your cellar.
At Wine Cellar Specialists, they cater to the unique requirements of their clients who want to have a safe and stellar storage area for their prized wines. A wine enthusiast, who lives in a condominium in Texas, requested them to create a modern wine cellar design for their home.
The goal of Wine Cellar Specialists was to transform a tiny space under the stairs into a wine cellar that would match the modern setting of their client’s home.
3-Dimensional Drawings for a Modern Wine Cellar Design
Wine Cellar Specialists offers a free custom design package that shows the plan views, dimensions, racking styles, and capacity of the wine room. The 3D drawings allow the clients to visualize the completed wine cellar. This is an important aspect of the planning stage of building a wine cellar.

Since the stairs have bamboo steps with steel beams, they chose the brushed aluminum pegs, Alumasteel backer boards, and gray walls. These choices helped in achieving a modern residential wine cellar under the staircase.
Modern Wine Cellar Design Using Sleek Metal Wine Racks
The limited space and irregular shape of the room did not stop Wine Cellar Specialists from building a sophisticated wine cellar. In addition to aesthetic appeal, they always do their best to maximize the storage capacity of the available space. To achieve this, they recommended a double-deep wine rack system that would store more bottles than the single-deep racks.
For homeowners who want to display their collection in a sleek wine cellar, Wine Cellar Specialists offers practical and efficient storage solutions. They recommend using metal wine racks. These wine storage units are in demand in building custom wine cellars because of their modern appeal.
Flexibility
Another benefit of the metal wine rack system is its flexibility. They can complement both traditional and modern living spaces.
You can use metal wine racks alone for your entire racking, or you may combine it with wooden wine racks. They can also fit easily even in the tiniest corner of your wine room. The Ultra Peg system is a line of metal wine racks used in this residential wine cellar project in Texas.
Various Modern Wine Cellar Design Options
With many types of metal wine racks, you will not run out of design options for your cellar. Wine Cellar Specialists offers stand-alone units and wall mounted metal wine racks. On this custom wine cellar under the stairs project, they installed the wall mounted Ultra Peg system.
Ultra Peg Wine Rack System – an Innovative Wine Storage Solution
Wine Cellar Specialists made use of lightweight and durable pegs to create an elegant wine rack system. It is called the Ultra Peg system, one of the newest types of wine storage racks that are becoming more popular on the market.
Convenience in Browsing Specific Wines
Two pegs can hold one bottle, displaying it horizontally. This bottle orientation shows the wine labels, which allows the owner to find a specific type of wine with ease.
It eliminates the need for flipping the bottle just to see the important information like variety, brand name, net contents, and alcohol content.
Flipping the bottle can disturb the wine’s sediments, which can result in an unpleasant taste.
Ease of Installation and Safety Feature
Another advantage of the Ultra Peg metal wine rack system is the ease of installation. Before the installation of the racking on site, the backer boards were already pre-drilled.
Additionally, the pegs used in the Ultra Peg system have rubber O-rings. This safety feature prevents the client’s bottles from slipping out of the pegs. This is one of its advantages over other types of metal wine racks.
Efficient Cooling Unit for a Safe Residential Wine Cellar in Texas
Wine deteriorates easily if it is stored in poor conditions. It can age properly in an environment where the temperature is between 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels from 60-70 percent. This condition can be achieved if a reliable cooling system is installed in your wine cellar.
If you don’t know what type, size, and brand of refrigeration system is suitable for your needs, an expert can help you. Contact Wine Cellar Specialists today!
Installation of the Wine Cellar Cooling System
Challenges in installing the wine refrigeration system are common in wine cellar construction. On this project, Wine Cellar Specialists encountered some difficulties.
The client did not want to patch up or cut the ceiling of the wine room. It was impossible for the builder to run the lines across the exterior ceiling because of the way the beams ran.
The team at Wine Cellar Specialists decided to run the lines down the interior of the adjoining elevator shaft. What they did was to create a soffit on the lower level. This allowed them to run the lines across and out to the courtyard.
They also needed to install a condensate pump within the cooling unit due to the irregular height of the drain line. They placed the wine refrigeration unit between the studs of the left wall, in a vertical position.
Commercial Grade Wine Cooling Unit
The right type and brand of refrigeration system play an important role in achieving the optimum storage environment for wine. Wine Cellar Specialists offers a variety of cooling options.
For this residential wine cellar, they used the WM6600 cooling unit by US Cellar Systems. It is an ideal choice for modern wine cellars enclosed in glass. They applied a powder coating to the unit to match the paint of the wall and the steel beams of the stairs.
